STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES FOR ESR RATE


1. SPECIMEN:

  1. EDTA ( anticoagulant ) blood sample stable for 2 hours at 25 C and 12 hours at 4C.

2. EQUIPMENTS:

a. Windtrobe ESR Tube and ESR stand.

b. Timer


3. PROCEDURE:

  1. Fill the Wintrobe ESR tube with EDTA blood sample to zero-level. (Note – there should be
complete absence of any air bubbles inside the tube).


  1.  Mount the tube at the ESR stand.
  2. Start the timer for one hour.
  3. After timer expires, record the result as the ratio (mm/Hr) of settled cells and above clear plasma. 5. Prepare lab report of the observations.
